Service animals are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities. The work or task a service animal has been trained to provide must be directly related to the person’s disability. Dogs whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support do not qualify as service animals. A parent of a student who uses a service/assistance animal because of the student’s disability must submit a request in writing to the Campus Director at least ten business days before bringing the service animal on campus. The written request should contain the following information:
- the name of the student handler;
- the type of service animal (dog or other);
- the name of the service animal;
- a brief description of why the animal is required because of a disability; and
- a brief description of the work or task the animal has been trained to perform.
